  1999 10.7 Meter Carver 350 Mariner Diesel

Description

Diesel is safer, and a bit rare. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Her length overall (LOA) is a little over 37’6” counting the bow sprit and swim platform, and the Coast Guard Documentation lists it as 36.3 feet—but I listed it as a 35’ boat because that is what a Carver 350 Mariner is called.  She has a roomy, beamy salon because the stairs to the spacious helm go up and over the salon on either side. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Appraisal Nov 2007 values this Restored, Repowered and Updated twin-diesel pleasure and entertainment platform at $159,000 after finishing a few items such as final carpet, curtains, stereo installation, GPS replacement (the 1999 Garmin model on board has no chart chip; radar recently serviced and works fine but it is a Raytheon B&W 1999 model), sheets and comforter for stateroom, interior trim board replacement covering, some decorative hull liner, microwave and pots and pans.  Most of these things are finished now (fall 2008) and we are continuing to complete these small items to make the boat finished and polished for the spring of 2009.  I have well over $270,000 invested to date (not counting lots of free labor) but that does not matter since it is a sunk cost and I have to move on—I will sell it for a reasonable price; this was a labor of love I purchased as a project to do with some teenagers, who immediately decided to work on cars instead (apparantly, teenage girls like cars better than boats); and, the project was MUCH more involved than we first thought.  I listed it at $139,000 but this is negotiable--make me an offer after you see the boat.  This is a unique diesel-powered boat; and, given its degree of refurbishment, you will be getting quite a bargain for anything less than $150,000 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

We take it out and love the way she planes; our favorite trips are across the Severn River to Cantler’s Riverside Inn and to downtown Annapolis to dock for a few days (nice to walk out of the piano bar at midnight and stroll 100 yards to the yacht for the night).

The newly designed and installed house battery and inverter system let you watch a DVD or brew a pot of tea while at anchor without running the diesel generator.

Details:

Boat was purchased at auction from the insurance company in October 2004.  She was partially submerged on a sandy bottom in Punta Gorda, FL during hurricane Charley in 2004.  Her starboard hull rested on the sandy bottom in a marina and water entered the starboard side of the engine compartment and the starboard side of the salon and stateroom as well as partially up the port side.  The helm and the upper deck was untouched by sea water.  As part of this complete restoration, we stripped almost everything out of the lower decks:  bulkheads, components, engines, motors including sump pumps, generator, transmissions, V-Drives, wiring . . . yes almost everything except the fuel tanks and sewage tank which were serviced in place.  Water tank was removed and reinstalled and some drain lines such as from the head sink were left in place.  We replaced almost everything except things like a submersible sump pumps.  All work was done in a professional, custom manner by professionals in the Chesapeake marine industry using the best available components, materials and processes.

1999 hull with ALL NEW EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENTS in salon, stateroom and engine room:  NEW exact replacements for the original Cummins propulsion DIESELS from Cummins (four hours on each), NEW Kohler diesel generator from a Kohler dealer (two hours or so on the DG), NEW sewage lines (the best available), NEW AC pumps, NEW motors, NEW trim tab hydraulic pump, NEW custom electrical panels (3), all NEW wiring below the helm, NEW interior and UPGRADES: . . .  including DC to AC inverter/charger, house battery, second hot water heater (double capacity now), etc.

V-Drives and Transmissions were professionally rebuilt.  Professionally checked and cleaned shafts and props.  Rudders were professionally trued (starboard rudder had slight bend).  Helm and upper deck were undamaged--only lower deck was submerged toward starboard side on sandy bottom in shallow water.  Hull fine and has fresh bottom paint and zincs in the Spring of 07; she has been in the water in Annapolis since mid-December 2006.  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

NEW Cherry interior bulkheads, drawer fronts, doors, and trim.  You need to see this one to appreciate the quality and thoroughness of the custom woodwork . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

After two years of work in dry-dock, she was launched in December 2006 and has been in the water in Annapolis, Maryland ever since (except for hauling in April 2006 for fresh bottom paint and zinks and hauling in September 2008 for the winter).  We have taken it across the Severn River for dinner and other short jaunts—it runs great and has plenty of room for ten to fourteen seated persons on the upper deck (near the icemaker) during transit, and sleeps six indoors at night plus sleeping spaces on bench seats on upper deck areas . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Details of the upgrades:

Regarding the level and quality of work and upgrades; the boat is better than new in many ways:  1. The inexpensive, flexible corrugated bilge pump discharge hose was replaced with a smooth-walled version now recommended for the purpose.  2.  The 4" dryer-vent-type vent style ducting was all replaced with a thick-walled, 4” rubber-type hose made to withstand high temperatures and chaffing--the original hose was disintegrating after a few hundred hours of operation; this was done for all locations including the bilge blowers in the engine compartment and the head vent fan.  3.  The carbon-steel clad water heater was replaced with a stainless steel version, And, 4.  Two were installed to double the hot water capacity.  And, 5.  Port engine heat cooling water system was plumbed to create hot water while underway.  6.  The electrical connections for ground, neutral and DC-positive buses were thin materials and mostly just plain copper without plating (incredible)—we replaced all these on the lower deck with high capacity, tinned-copper terminal blocks (I am an electrical engineer in the power industry).  7.  The bilge pumps were not wired consistently—some were wired for both automatic and manual operation but two were wired for automatic operation only; we bought switch parts to extend the operation of the manual switches on the helm and wired each sump pump to be both automatic and manual. 8.  Not all bilge pumps were the same size—all are now 1500 GPM units, typically Rule brand.  9.  The starboard engine was aligned properly for the first time ever (from the factory, the alignment could not have been correct because our millwright had to drill new holes in the mounting plates to get the alignment correct for the new diesel engines).  10.  We installed a vent fan in the engine compartment, which takes suction from under the salon floor—this will create a bit of quiet airflow to help keep fresh air coming into the living compartments.  11.  All sewage pipe was replaced with the best available, unlike the factory installed version that had some odor.  12.  We installed a bubbler system in the sewage tank to eliminate anaerobic odors.  13.  The factory steel element stove was upgraded to a smooth-top glass unit.  14.  Wiring is installed for a future salt water washdown pump to be located aft of the engines.  15.  Extra circuit breakers allows for future expansion.  16.   All interior cushions were replaced with new, custom materials and are extremely comfortable and make us of the most modern leather-like materials.  17.  The mattress in the Stateroom is EXTREMELY comfortable, extra thick with a soft pillow top style—not just your standard foam yacht mattress (it was very expensive and custom manufactured to fit well).  Interior cushions and mattress was custom created by Yacht Interiors of Annapolis.  18.  In addition, the mattress folds up in the middle to allow access to the compartments under the bed (the original mattress required you to lift the entire piece to get under it).  19.  We installed a 120V AC, GF protected outlet in the engine compartment.  20.  We installed high-powered DC halogen lights (4) in the engine compartment to flood the compartment with light to make it easier to see in there even in bright daylight.  21 and, of course, the new propusion diesel engines and the upsized diesel generator have only a few hours each on them.  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Whenever there was doubt about the suitability of a component such as a seacock, hose or clamp, we replaced it. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Hp figures are per engine so the total is around 500 hp.  And, while these are called 250 “hp” engines, the Cummins power curves show a peak of 240 hp . . . and, there is limited time during which you can operate at full power . . . but if you are an experienced power boater, you already understand this . . . ;).  And yes, it does plane up nicely to about 18 knots at 2600 rpm.   . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Draft of a bit over 3' lets you explore the good gunk hole spots--boat is a beamy, full cabin entertainment boat with a fantastic command bridge above.  Icemaker on Command Bridge identifies this yacht as a cruising, overnight entertainment platform.  As you can tell from the description, this is now a 2005-2008 custom boat in a 1999 Carver hull.  Come see the boat and let’s take her out so I can show her off.  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

She is fully US Coast Guard documented and as a result, does not need a state title.  Maryland sales tax was paid because I live in MD and operate the boat in MD waters.  If you buy it, you will have to have the Coast Guard documentation transferred to your name.  You will need to check with your state maritime law to see if you will have to pay sales tax in your state for a CG Documented boat.  Boat is fully insured for loss and liability.  There is currently no lien or debt on the boat.
